The softball intramural season came to end yesterday with team “APU”, not to be confused with Azusa Pacific University, defeating “The Jennerics” in the championship game.
The two teams faced off in the championship game after winning their semifinal matches that day. In the first game, APU knocked out Loch Ness. The second games saw The Jennerics eliminate the Thundercats in one of the most exciting games of the season. The back-and-forth battle went into extra innings and finished with Eric Leboffe scoring the winning run.
“We played well,” said league commissioner and Thundercats team member Scott Kohlmann. “There were certain situations where we should have capitalized but we didn’t.”
Although the Jennerics went into the title game with great momentum, it was just not enough to handle APU, which was led by Chase Birky’s strong performance. Birky, in both games combined, went 11-for-11 with eight home runs, two doubles, a triple and 17 RBI. APU was the No. 7 team going into the playoffs and finished with an overall record of 7-3.
“It was a really fun season,” said Kohlmann. “There was lots of competition and some good talent.”
The 2007 intramural football ended on Wednesday, Nov. 14, with the Bolts coming out on top over the Heman Women Haters by a final score of 6-0.
“The championship [was the most memorable] because you’re playing good friends,” said senior Andrew Allison.
Even though the season was over, the playing did not end there. Fourteen players from the first and second place PLNU team entered a tournament at Biola on Saturday.
The Sea Lions were scheduled to face Concordia in the first game but won via forfeit because Concordia never arrived. In the second game, the Sea Lions faced the three-time defending champion Biola Eagles and won after a thrilling three-overtime battle by the final score of 8-0.
After a third round bye, PLNU squared off against Biola and again defeated them, this time by a more demanding score of 18-2.
The championship match involved rivals PLNU and Azusa Pacific.
“It was the craziest physical game [I’ve ever played],” said Allison.
With the score tied 16-14, Azusa Pacific had time for one final play. At the snap, the Azusa Pacific quarterback tried running it in himself but was taken down just before reaching the end zone.
“The reason we beat [Azusa] is because we didn’t give them time to do anything,” said center/defensive tackle Jared Hambrook. “We sacked the quarterback every other time."
